Unclaimed Property/ Unclaimed Checks
Unclaimed monies for items over $15 remaining in the treasury or in the custody of the officers of a local agency for three (3) years, become the property of the agency (Government Code Section 50050, et.seq.). At the end of the three (3) year period, those items in excess of $15 must be published as notification that the money will become the property of the agency after a designated date if it is left unclaimed.
Items under $15 become the property of the agency after (1) one year. These items do not need to be published.

If a verified claim is not filed by the designated date (45 days after the date of the first publication), the unclaimed monies will become the property of the City and can no longer be claimed.

The City of Port Hueneme has a duty to release funds to the rightful payee. Be sure to include all required information with your claim request. Failure to include the required documentation may result in your claim being denied and returned to you. Please provide as much information as possible in order to expedite the review process.
If you cannot provide the requested documentation, please attach a letter explaining why you are entitled to the unclaimed check and identify any special circumstances that may apply to your claim.
Note: It may take up to 90 days to process your claim, and if approved, approximately 30 additional days for you to receive payment. This process may take longer under certain circumstances.
