Council Member Tom Figg
Port Hueneme City Council Member Tom Figg

Port Hueneme resident for more than 40 years, former City employee, and now self-employed consultant, Tom Figg was elected to the City Council in November 2014 and appointed Mayor in December 2016.  Before establishing his urban planning firm in 1998, Tom managed the planning and redevelopment programs for the Cities of Ventura and Port Hueneme, spanning public service career of 22 years.  Since then, Tom has provided (and continues to provide) urban planning services to a host of public and private clients throughout the California central coast. He also serves as an expert witness and lead negotiator in housing and land use litigation and has been involved in more than a dozen different State and Federal Court cases to date.

• Background: Born and raised in Sacramento, California, married with three children, and a resident of Port Hueneme since 1975. Educated in Architecture and Urban Planning with a Bachelor of Science Degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Northridge.

• Recognitions: Sacramento Building Industry Association and Bank of America (special scholarship awards), American Planning Association (scholastic achievement award), Ventura County Commission on Human Concerns (fair housing award), Port Hueneme Boys & Girls Club (facility development award), and Port Hueneme Chamber of Commerce (1995 Citizen of the Year).

• Affiliations: Bard Elementary and E.O. Green School Site Councils (Chairman/Member 2009-2012); Hueneme School District Advisory Committee (Member 2010-2012); Friends of the Bard Mansion (Board Member 2011-2013); North Oxnard AYSO, Navy CBC Youth Baseball, and Port Hueneme Boys & Girls Club Flag Football (Coach/Manager 2006-2010).

Fresh out of college, Tom immediately started his career at the City of Port Hueneme in 1975. During the ensuing 20+ years of his employment with the City, he was one of many who helped transform a community that was once considered an undesirable place to live into what many now refer to as the Jewel of the Gold Coast. This transformation was a team effort and was made possible through a shared sense of ownership and common vision. Tom feels privileged to have been part of this experience and hopes to re-instill this sense of purpose during his term on the Council.

Tom’s foremost goal is to continue the progress and legacy of Port Hueneme: distinguishing ourselves from other communities, keeping our neighborhoods safe and kid friendly, delivering responsive customer service, maintaining an attractive physical environment, creating mutually supportive partnerships with our key stakeholders, and providing a solid financial basis to sustain municipal services including a hometown police force. His core values are based on problem-solving through collaboration, transparency, fiscal prudence and strategic planning.
