Port Hueneme Distinguished Speaker Series: “Women’s Right to Vote in California”
Saturday, May 20
Author, Journalist, and Historian, Dr. Beverly Kelleywill be speaking on the topic “Women’s Right to Vote in California”.If it were up to the voters of Ventura County (but not Hueneme), California women would not have gotten the right to vote in 1911. Yet the state constitutional amendment did carry (125,037 to 121, 450), largely due to the efforts of grassroots community organizations, creative fundraising efforts, the employment of new technology, and inspired leadership by such remarkable women as Ventura’s own Adelaide Binns Comstock.
Because of her expertise, Dr. Beverly Kelley was invited to deliver the keynote address celebrating the Centennial of the Women’s Vote to the California League of Women Voters in May of 2011. As Kelley concluded, it was California that provided the critical mass leading to the eventual passage of the 29th Amendment named after Susan B. Anthony.
