Investigative Services Division

The Investigative Services Division serves as the investigative arm of the Police Department. Within this context, detectives are tasked with providing the department’s follow-up investigation on selected felony and misdemeanor offenses, with an emphasis placed on developing prosecutable cases, identifying suspects, and apprehending criminal offenders.

The Division is supervised by a sergeant and consists of one senior officer and three detectives. The personnel in this division are assigned to particular categories of crimes. These include Major Crimes/Crimes Against Persons and Property /Financial Crimes. Two of the detectives are assigned to the Special Problems Unit (due to current staffing levels however, one Special Problems Unit position is vacant). The Special Problems Unit detectives are assigned to Gang, Narcotic, Vice, Auto Theft, Alcohol Beverage Control, and Domestic Violence cases. The Investigative Services Division also includes the Property and Evidence Room, Court Liaison, and Crime Analysis/Crime Prevention.

Property and Evidence is responsible for the receiving, cataloging, storage, and security of evidence and other property. On average the Port Hueneme Police Department Property and Evidence Room handles between 2,000 and 3,000 articles of property annually.

A Police Support Services Officer files selected cases with the District Attorney’s Office and acts as a liaison between police department personnel and the DA’s Office and the Court, such as serving subpoenas and monitoring a case status log and follow-up/supplemental investigation log.

Crime Analysis/Crime Prevention provides currently useful information to aid personnel in meeting their tactical crime control and prevention objectives by identifying and analyzing methods of operation of individual criminals, providing crime pattern recognition, and providing analysis of data from field interviews and arrests.
