Port Hueneme Potential Commission Site for USS Tulsa

The Secretary of the Navy is in the process of selecting a commissioning site for USS Tulsa (LCS-16). The Tulsa is a Littoral Combat Ship Class utilizing innovative acquisition, construction, manning, training and operational concepts. http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&tid=1650&ct="4"

Three sites are under consideration for the commissioning; Port Hueneme CA, San Francisco CA and Key West FL. The commissioning date will be circa January 2019. Representatives of the Secretary reached out to the Channel Islands Council of the Navy League to spearhead this effort for Port Hueneme. They asked the Navy League to commit to this undertaking by the end of January.

In order for the Navy League to commit to the Secretary, they need to have $100,000 pledged (not paid), from the community, by the end January. If selected they will then ask for the funding of the pledges in later in 2018. They are asking those in the community to consider a pledge in the $5,000 to $20,000 range to help reach their goal. The budget is $200,000 to $250,000. To offset this cost, they expect to raise $50,000 to $70,000 from the City of Tulsa, and from the contractors who built the Tulsa.

These monies are used for the social aspects of the commissioning, relating to the crew of the Tulsa, elected dignitaries, other VIP guests, gifting and a half-dozen luncheons and receptions. Monies received that are not used for the commissioning will be donated to the Tulsa’s Morale and Welfare fund to support first and future crews.

The facilities at Port Hueneme were visited last month by the Secretary’s representative along with Commander Drew A. Borovies, the Prospective Commanding Officer of the Tulsa. Once they give the go ahead that they want to participate, they will make their site recommendation to the Secretary and we will await the outcome.
