Discolored Water Notice

Due to the extended drought conditions facing California (especially Ventura County) some City of Port Hueneme Water customers may experience discolored water (due to higher levels of iron and manganese in the groundwater). Because water is a cutting agent, when high velocity flows occur such as when a fire hydrant is hit or when fighting a fire, it can scour the lining of the water main and break loose iron oxide (iron deposits accumulated on the lining of the water main) that may generate dirty water complaints.

If residents experience discolored water, the sediment in the water should settle and be back to normal in a few hours. Running a garden hose outside to water plants and grass for two - five minutes will help to speed up the clearing of the sediment in the water. Please do not allow water run-off to the storm drain.

If you experience discolored water, the City is asking residents to drink bottled water and discontinue use of washing machines until the dirty water has cleared. Drinking bottled water is only a safe guard and will be more pleasant to consume. There are no health effects resulting from body contact with discolored water.

If clothes were washed with discolored water, the Water Division has some commercial products that will remove the rust color from the garments (required to be re-washed) provided they have not been dried. Customers can call the Water Division (during normal business hours) at 986-6563 to request this product. The best thing that residents can do at this point is to be patient

The City apologizes for any inconvenience this situation may cause and appreciates your understanding. For more information contact the Public Works Department at (805) 986-6563. To receive an immediate Discolored Water Notice (and other urgent messages), sign up for NOTIFY ME on the City's website.
