The Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum Distinguished Speaker Series- Port Hueneme’s Own Olympic Silver Medalist Francis Xavier "Frank" Gorman

Saturday, March 24

While we all enjoy Olympic stories that celebrate the triumph of the American spirit, it’s those athletes who refuse to yield to disappointment who have much more to teach us. Frank Gorman, who turned 80 last Veteran’s Day, has graciously agreed to share his Olympic story with us. The Harvard grad would just miss the cut for the 1960 Olympics in Rome. As USN Lt. Frank Gorman, though, he would coach navy divers until 1964, when he would earn a ticket to compete in Tokyo. Those in the know believed Gorman to be the very best the US had to offer. In fact, he was totally expected to best his 19-year-old American teammate Kenneth Sitzberger in the men's three-meter springboard. But that was not to be. After an unfortunate tenth dive, Gorman would end up bringing home the silver while Sitzberger grabbed the gold.
